Pound Plunge
Pound Plunge began as a community partnership between Heartland Health and K-JO 105.5. The two joined together to develop a fun event that would bring the community together and promote healthy lifestyles.
This 12-week weight-loss competition challenges teams of four to adopt a healthy lifestyle and shrink their waistlines in the process. Teams register online, attend a Kick-Off event, weekly weigh-ins and fitness sessions while competing for great prizes. In the first year, 2006, we saw 1,200 people take the plunge and participation has increased to include 1,500+ in the years following. To date, Pound Plunge participants have lost nearly 30,000 pounds!
"We wanted to bring a fun and competitive challenge to the community to get people thinking about lifestyles and habits," explains Kim McManus, Heartland's Wellness Connections. "This is a jumping off point for people to realize that adopting a healthy lifestyle is a community effort and how much we need the support of our family and friends when making these changes to our lives. It also shows us that improving our own health helps our community as a whole and helps control health-care costs. We are very fortunate to have a close-knit community like St. Joe where we can celebrate our successes together."
The Pound Plunge runs from the second week in January to the first week in April. Team registration starts in mid-December. To see more, visit www.takethepoundplunge.com.
