HI Events & Services - Colorectal Cancer Screening

The Cancer Center at Heartland Regional Medical Center sponsors a free colorectal screening in March each year during National Colorectal Awareness month. Those who participate in the screening receive home test kits that are quick and easy to complete. This screening is for anyone age 50 or older or those who have a family history of colorectal cancer.

"We sponsor this annual screening for one simple reason — it saves lives!" says Robert Johnson, MD, radiation oncologist, The Cancer Center. Early detection of any colorectal disorder is most successfully treated in its early stages. One example, colorectal cancer, often starts with no symptoms. Small, non-cancerous growths of tissue called "polyps," develop on the lining of the colon or rectum. Without treatment, the polyps can turn cancerous and spread. Screening tests can lead to the diagnosis of precancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer.

Beginning in March you will be able to get your free home test kit. Keep checking the HI Web site for more information.
